Kick-Off Community Workshop for Estudio Damgo II

The kick-off community workshop for the next Estudio Damgo project was held on Sunday, May 5, 2013.  Foundation University is partnering with the City of Dumaguete and the displaced residents and victims of the flooding from typhoon Ondoy in 2009 and Sendong in December 2011. Together, nearly 240 houses have been constructed for the flood survivors in Bajumpandan Barangay this past two years.  Incoming fifth year architecture students successfully facilitated their first community workshop of around 50 participants.  Estudio Damgo's goals are to help unite two communities with one multipurpose building. Construction begins in September 2013 and scheduled for completion in March 2014.  Students gathered information from the two communities, Caritas I and Core Shelter, to band together their needs, hopes, and dreams for this next ambitious project.  Design begins in June. A schematic design will be reviewed by the community in the coming weeks.  Follow the progress on Facebook Estudio Damgo.

This is the second Estudio Damgo project for the Department of Architecture at Foundation University, Philippines.  This program was started by Ray Villanueva, a colleague from graduate school at the University of Washington.  Estudio Damgo Design+Build program is the first of its kind in the Philippines and the reason why I ventured to the Philippines last October 2012 to co-instruct and assist Ray Villanueva on the construction for the pilot project, the Dungga Daycare.  The role to lead the second project was handed over to me.  In the photo, I'm introducing the program and the students to the workshop attendees.  - Photo by Hersley-Ven Casero
